2009-10 Artist Educator Workshop Series
PAE is offering a series of professional development sessions structured as a "core curriculum" to expand and refine the skill set of teaching artists. All sessions are designed to be highly participatory and practical.
All sessions are on Saturday mornings, and take place at PAE's office in the Delavan Center in downtown Syracuse. You may register for individual sessions or for the entire series. Individual sessions are $10; advance enrollment for the series is $50. At-the-door registration is $15. Register for workshops.
September 26, 2009, 9 am - 12pm
The Art of Teaching: Creativity offers teachers and students that essential desire to seek more information and to grow in some new way. This session examines the parallels of artistic engagement to higher order thinking. “Third Space” or “aha” moments are brought into practical experiences for relevant and immediate application. October 24, 2009, 9 am - 12 pm
Development of Learners: Age, stage, ability, perspective, and orientation of learners are taken into account for design of activities and sequences of creative engagement. “Why and How” is at the center of planning and instruction. See notes from this session.
November 21, 2009, 9 am - 12pm
Creative Curriculum: Crafting dynamic learning experiences requires a living curriculum. Engaging students in all kinds of active learning requires planning and maintenance to get students out of their seats, to improvise, critique each other, develop habits of self-regulated behavior and respond in an energetic and focused manner. Lesson planning for arts integration with evaluation as a starting point and democratic instruction will be applied. See notes from this session.
January 23, 2010, 9 am - 12 pm
Partnership Matters: Teaching artists diplomatically navigate the space and ideals of many partners. Working with teachers, artists, families, community members, and administrators is a fact of life in creative engagement. This session will offer a range of strategies for successful collaboration and management of diverse environments.
February 27, 2010, 9 am - 12 pm
Teaching Artistry as a 21st Century Career: Artists are increasingly invited into social, educational, entrepreneurial, and technical settings to bring their right-brain perspectives and skills to a fast-changing world of career development. Contemporary resources and networks for succeeding in a career as a consulting artist will be examined for effective use.
April 24, 2010, 9 am - 12 pm
Critical Exchange: Critique and respond to the work of peer teaching artists and the work that they have completed to date as artists and as teachers. This session will provide a framework for ongoing professional development as an artist who teaches.
May 22, 2010, 9 am - 12 pm
Funding for Arts Education: Writing grants and pricing the work of arts engagement for schools, community organizations, individuals and even adult education will be explored in this session. Participants will draft sample grant proposals and we will research the resources that are available from local to national sources.
